This Is Arctic Land is a series of public interventions occurring throughout Ubmeje / Umeå, Sweden during the Arctic Arts Summit 2026 (16–18 June). Realised in collaboration with Tráhppie – the Sámi Culture Centre in Ubmeje and with UmArts – Research Centre for Architecture, Design and the Arts (University of Umeå), This Is Arctic Land is a multi-scalar and multi-sited project that takes form as:

1. A large banner on the facade of Tráhppie.

2. An installation of nine signs outside UmArts.

3. A monumental billboard in the city centre.

4. A limited-edition DIY stencil kit (series of 500) inserted into the Arctic Arts Summit conference pack.

Borrowing its rhythm and form from the well-known slogan “This Is Sami Land”, This Is Arctic Land pays homage to the importance of protest for land, self-determination and identity, in support of Ubmeje / Umeå in Sápmi. The project both addresses and participates in the processes of “Arctification” occurring in many northern areas today. Who chooses to be(come) part of the Arctic, or (re)brand themselves as “Arctic”, and to what ends? What is at stake, and what does it mean?
